Marie-Claude Beaud, director of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco – Villa Paloma and Villa Sauber – from 2009, will leave her position as of April 1st, 2021. Wednesday 17th June, in the presence of Françoise Gamerdinger, Directeur des Affaires Culturelles, Patrice Cellario, Conseiller de Gouvernement - Ministre de l’Intérieur announced that she will be succeeded by Björn Dahlström, who will be in charge of the Principality’s art museum.

Björn Dahlström (1975, Casablanca) is an art historian (École du Louvre, Paris) and museum director.

Dahlström meets with Marie-Claude Beaud in 2000, while working on the inventory of artist Bob Wilson’s collection at the Watermill Center in the United States. Beaud, at that time director of Mudam (Luxembourg’s modern art museum), invites him to go back to Europe and work with her on the programming of the institution, which opens to the public in 2006.

This is the context in which the two curate the exhibition “Air Conditioned” by the artist Su-Mei Tse representing Luxembourg at the 50. International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2003. The show is awarded with the Golden Lion for Best National Participation.

In 2008 Dahlström joins a group of international researchers and curator invited by sportswear brand PUMA to work on the development of its new sponsorship policy for the development of contemporary art in Africa and the creation of a research network on the contemporary African art scene, which eventually resulted in the creation of ZEITZ MOCAA - Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town (South Africa), by Jochen Zeitz.

In 2010 he is back to Morocco, interested by Fondation Jardin Majorelle to coordinate the creation of the Musée Berbère in Marrakech, where he holds the position of curator for 9 years. Meanwhile, for Pierre Bergé, he participates in the restoration of Emile Zola’s House near Paris and directs the project of the Musée Dreyfus which will open next year in the park of the writer’s house.

In 2015, as Director of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, and together with Pierre Bergé and Madison Cox, Dahlström coordinates the construction of the museum (designed by Studio KO), which opens in 2017 in the immediate vicinity of the Jardin Majorelle. In 2019 he is also appointed Director of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Paris.

Starting from April 2021, Björn Dahlström will succeed to Marie-Claude Beaud as Director of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
